What trades carry

Coverage built for your work.

General Liability

Third-party bodily injury and property damage your work or operations cause — a client trips over a cord, you crack a homeowner's tile, your sign falls on a car. Includes products-completed-operations (claims after the job is done).

Contracts often require: Additional insured (often with a CG 20 10 / CG 20 37 endorsement for ongoing + completed ops), waiver of subrogation, and primary & non-contributory wording are the three things contracts ask for most.

Workers' Compensation

Medical bills and lost wages when an employee is hurt on the job, plus employer's liability. Rated on payroll by class code.

Contracts often require: Certificate of WC + a waiver of subrogation in favor of the GC is standard. GCs verify it before you're allowed on site.

Commercial Auto

Liability and physical damage for vehicles used for the business — the work truck, van, or trailer. Hired & non-owned auto covers employees driving their own vehicles for work.

Contracts often require: $1M CSL, additional insured, and waiver of subrogation are common. Hauling others' materials may trigger a cargo/installation-floater ask.

Tools & Equipment (Inland Marine)

Your tools, equipment, and materials wherever they are — on the job site, in transit, or stolen from the truck. Often written as a contractor's equipment / installation floater.

Contracts often require: Rarely contract-required, but installation floaters matter when you're installing owner-furnished materials you're responsible for until acceptance.

What contracts require

GCs and property managers require GL with additional insured + waiver of subrogation, WC with a waiver, and a $1M auto COI before you're allowed on site.

In Utah

Most trades need a Utah DOPL contractor license for their classification; WC is required with any employee (exemption registration available for owner-only). Permit/license bonds apply to some classifications.
