What trucking carry

Coverage built for your work.

Commercial Trucking (Auto Liability + Physical Damage)

Primary auto liability for a motor carrier, physical damage on the tractor/trailer, and non-trucking liability (bobtail) when off dispatch. The core policy for an owner-operator or fleet.

Contracts often require: An MCS-90 endorsement (FMCSA financial responsibility), the carrier's MC/DOT on file, additional insured for the broker/shipper, and a $1M auto liability filing (BMC-91/91X) are standard. Under a motor-carrier's authority, a primary-liability filing is required.

Motor Truck Cargo

The freight in the trailer against theft, damage, fire, and collision in transit. Excludes certain commodities (it's tailored to what you actually haul).

Contracts often require: Broker/shipper agreements specify a minimum cargo limit (commonly $100k), naming requirements, and sometimes reefer-breakdown coverage. Deductible and excluded-commodity list matter.

Workers' Compensation

Medical bills and lost wages when an employee is hurt on the job, plus employer's liability. Rated on payroll by class code.

Contracts often require: Certificate of WC + a waiver of subrogation in favor of the GC is standard. GCs verify it before you're allowed on site.

General Liability

Third-party bodily injury and property damage your work or operations cause — a client trips over a cord, you crack a homeowner's tile, your sign falls on a car. Includes products-completed-operations (claims after the job is done).

Contracts often require: Additional insured (often with a CG 20 10 / CG 20 37 endorsement for ongoing + completed ops), waiver of subrogation, and primary & non-contributory wording are the three things contracts ask for most.

What contracts require

Brokers/shippers require $1M auto liability with an MCS-90, cargo (commonly $100k), additional insured for the broker, the carrier's MC/DOT, and sometimes a 90-day notice of cancellation. Under motor-carrier authority, primary-liability filings (BMC-91X) are required.

In Utah

Interstate carriers need active FMCSA authority (MC number) + federal filings; intrastate-only Utah carriers register with the state. Owner-operators leased to a carrier may run under the carrier's filings but still need bobtail/non-trucking liability and often occupational-accident coverage.
